Auto transport by road

How to transport a vehicle from state to state

Transporting vehicles across state lines is straightforward. It follows the same process as transporting a vehicle within your state, though transit times vary by distance. Carriers typically cover around 500 miles per day, so the more lead time you allow, the better.

Per FMCSA regulations, personal items cannot be left in your vehicle during transport. You may leave items that belong in the vehicle — such as a spare tire, floor mats, or basic tools.

Frequently asked questions

The cost to ship a car between states depends on the distance, vehicle size, and transport type. Open transport is the most cost-effective option for standard cars, SUVs, and trucks. Enclosed transport is available for classic, luxury, or high-value vehicles.

When you contact Mercury, an agent will gather your vehicle and shipping details, locate the right carrier, and walk you through all available pickup and delivery options. Get an instant quote to get started.

Overseas shipping costs depend on the origin port and destination country. Our agents specialize in international vehicle transport and can provide a custom no-obligation quote with all available options. Call (800) 553-1828 to speak with a specialist.

Hawaii shipments are completed in two legs. The first leg is from your pickup location to the port — either Long Beach, CA or Seattle, WA, whichever is most cost-effective for your route.

The second leg — port to Hawaii — costs $1,495 for a car, SUV, or pickup truck from Long Beach, CA, Oakland, CA, or Seattle. Shipping from Hawaii back to the mainland (West Coast ports) costs $895–$995 for full service.

Hawaii ports served: Honolulu, Hilo, Kahului, and Nawiliwili. Rates vary by port. Call (800) 553-1828 to confirm your rate.
